2020 School Results
This has been a year like no other for everyone. All schools, their staff and students had to respond in an extraordinary set of circumstances and their resilience has been admirable. Our 2020 Year 11 students’ GCSE grades reflected outstanding hard work over their five years at Hetton, and particular resilience in the last term. We are very proud of all the effort that they put in to their studies, and know that their outcomes have helped to ensure that they proceeded to post-16 courses with confidence.
For many, the loss of the exams, which appeared initially to be great news, left them feeling uncertain whether to celebrate their results. They were right to do so, because the results they received are based on performance in mock exams (PPEs), classwork, homework and coursework that they have done. For others, they were frustrated that they were denied the chance to show what they could have done in the final stretch to improve their grades, as they had intended to do.
For all of them, there will be lessons to learn from this experience. Resilience, independence, hard work and compassion will guide them all. Those that flew high, should be humble, those that fell short, should renew their determination and make sure that their post-16 studies are approached with the most positive of attitudes.
I am hugely proud of what they achieved during their time at Hetton School, and look forward to seeing what they can go on to achieve in the coming years. I am also very grateful to all the parents, who provided outstanding support at all times, but particularly in that last term. Of course, I am also proud of the staff who have discovered new skills in remote learning this last few months, but worked with, encouraged and enthused these young people throughout their GCSE courses.
There are no performance tables for schools this year and we have not published our results in the usual manner, but progress rates continue to drive forward, with the trend expected to accelerate in 2021.
2019
In 2019, Year 11 results at Hetton School have risen again for the third year in a row. Subjects like English, Maths and Science have led the way with improvements in the percentage of students achieving Level 5 grades and above in all areas.
