School Uniform

Our students are well presented, display good manners and demonstrate courtesy and respect to others. We work hard to develop their aspiration and ambition through a growth mind-set philosophy we call Learn to Achieve.

The Department of Education believes school uniform “can play a valuable role in contributing to the ethos of a school and setting an appropriate tone.”

The Hetton School governors and school leaders agree and believe that maintaining this standard sets a tone that transfers to the positive Mindset of students when they are learning, and so it is crucial that expectations and standards remain at the highest level.

Hetton School has a duty to make sure that the uniform we require is affordable, in line with statutory guidance from the Department for Education on the cost of school uniform.

As a school, we have catered for the needs of our school community and negotiated cost savings with the suppliers which are being passed on to parents/carers.

Schoolwear Associate Research 2020 indicates that the cost of the compulsory school uniform and sportswear items in the UK is £101.19 per student. On average, the ‘per student spend’ of compulsory items by Hetton students was £36.24 per year (not all items need to be replaced annually). For the items deemed compulsory, we are the most cost-effective school in Sunderland, and we fall into the top 25% of schools in the UK for cheapest compulsory items (at May 2022 prices).

We will make sure our uniform:

  • Is available at a reasonable cost
  • Provides the best value for money for parents/carers

The minimum compulsory items that must be purchased from our preferred suppliers are:

Main School Uniform

  • A School badge for blazer £4
  • A School Tie £4

All other items can be purchased elsewhere but they must meet the school uniform expectations, which is why all uniform items are available to purchase from The School Outfit to make buying a student’s school uniform as simple and cost effective as possible. As well as buying online, parents can also visit the shops as shown in the expectation section below

P.E. Kit

The minimum compulsory items that must be purchased from our preferred suppliers Avec Sports are:

  • P.E. T-Shirt £9.00 – £11.00
  • P.E. Shorts £5.60 – £7.50  or P.E. Tracksuit bottoms £13.90 – £19.95

Additional items can be purchased from Avec Sports at your discretion but the above reflects the minimum expectations and additional items purchased must be from the Hetton School approved range only as they will have the school logo embroidered on all items.

“My eldest son left school in 2007 so there was never any question of which school my youngest would attend in 2012. However, what a huge difference I’ve found in the school from then until now. The school is very well led with the Head being a major presence, the staff are very well respected, approachable and helpful at all levels. Examination results continue to improve which is fantastic. Pupil moral is great with reward schemes, extra-curricular activities and school excursions open to all.”

Parent of Year 8 Student

"Parents and carers are broadly supportive of the school and its new leadership. They feel that their children are well cared for and supported"

Ofsted Quote

“As parents, we are always impressed with the way in which Hetton School staff listen to comments or concerns, and act quickly and effectively, particularly when relating to pupil progress and wellbeing. There’s a good community feeling. Hetton School has good systems in place to support students’ individual attainment. It offers good opportunities outside of the school day for pupils to progress further. We’re well aware that standards and results at Hetton School have risen in recent years and continue to do so.”

Parent of Year 7 and 10 Student

"Pupils are proud of their school and its caring, tolerant ethos".

Ofsted Quote

“I am very pleased with the pastoral support. Hetton School value the opinion of students and this can only help to build self-confidence into adulthood.”

Parent of Year 10 Student

"The quality of leadership and teaching in the local authority resource provision for pupils who have speech and language difficulties enables pupils to make strong progress".

Ofsted Quote

“I have been very impressed with how well my daughter has settled into Hetton School. She has made some very good friends, gets on well with her form tutor, enjoys her lessons and has made good academic progress. The school keeps me up-to-date with how she is doing and acknowledges when she has done something of particular merit. The Parents Forum gives us a voice to bring up any issues that arise and for the school to ask our opinion also. I would definitely recommend Hetton School to any prospective pupil or parent, and with a new build coming, Hetton will finally have the building this good school deserves.”
